Viitepunkte (Finnish for reference points) are fixed, precisely known locations used as anchors for measurements and data alignment. They serve as a stable basis for relating observations collected at different times or with different instruments to a common coordinate reference system. Viitepunkte may be natural features with stable geometry or artificial monuments specifically erected for surveying. In practice, they form a geodetic control network or benchmark system.

They are established and maintained by national or regional surveying authorities and sometimes by local organizations. Establishment involves accurate determination of coordinates using GNSS, triangulation, leveling, and photogrammetry; the results are stored with metadata such as monument type, coordinates, height, uncertainty, and date. Maintaining includes monitoring drift, re-surveys, and documenting changes.

Uses: They anchor topographic maps, cadastral surveys, construction projects, and GIS datasets. They enable calibration of GNSS receivers, inertial navigation systems, and spatial data integration. In aviation and shipping, reference points on charts help navigation and plotting. In archaeology and cultural heritage, they enable precise spatial recording of finds. In remote sensing and 3D scanning, reference points provide a frame of reference for aligning datasets.

Notes: The term is often rendered in English as “reference points” or “geodetic control points,” and in Finnish practice the term is viitepisteet; national geospatial agencies maintain the networks and publish coordinates and uncertainty estimates.
