A videoclip is a short video produced to accompany a song or other audio track, primarily for promotional purposes. In many languages the term videoclip is used specifically for music videos, while in English the two-word form “video clip” is more generic and can refer to any short fragment of video.

History and development have been closely tied to the music industry and broadcast media. The rise of music television in the 1980s, notably channels like MTV, created demand for visually driven representations of songs. Early videoclip productions were often simple performance pieces, but advances in camera technology, editing, and special effects expanded creative options. With the advent of the internet and streaming platforms in the 2000s, distribution shifted from television to online channels, enabling rapid sharing and global reach.

Production and form vary widely. A typical videoclip may run three to five minutes and can take many forms, including performance-focused videos, narrative short films that illustrate the song’s lyrics or theme, or animated sequences. Subtypes have emerged, such as lyric videos that display the song’s words, and behind-the-scenes or live-performance clips. Production often involves concept development, directing, choreography, wardrobe, lighting, and post-production editing to synchronize visuals with the music.

Distribution and impact have evolved with technology. Videoclips are released on television premieres, music channels, or online platforms where they can drive streaming numbers, publicity, and fan engagement. They remain a central element of music marketing and artist branding, while also functioning as standalone creative works.
