Vestibulars are specialized sensory organs located within the vestibular system of the inner ear, primarily responsible for detecting head movements and maintaining balance and spatial orientation. They consist of structures such as the semicircular canals, utricle, and saccule, which work together to sense angular and linear accelerations.

The semicircular canals are three fluid-filled loops oriented at right angles to each other, enabling detection of rotational movements of the head. When the head turns, the fluid inside the canals shifts, stimulating hair cells that send signals to the brain about the direction and speed of rotation. The utricle and saccule, collectively known as otolith organs, detect linear accelerations and head position relative to gravity. They contain tiny calcium carbonate crystals called otoliths that shift with head movement, stimulating hair cells accordingly.

Vestibulars play a crucial role in stabilizing gaze during movement through the vestibulo-ocular reflex, allowing the eyes to maintain focus on a fixed point despite head motion. They also contribute to postural control by integrating sensory information from the visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular systems to coordinate balance.

Disorders of the vestibulars, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis, or Meniere's disease, can lead to dizziness, vertigo, balance disturbances, and oscillopsia. Diagnosis often involves clinical examinations and specialized tests like electronystagmography or vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.
