Veseartériaszűkület is a medical condition characterized by the narrowing of one or both renal arteries, the blood vessels that supply blood to the kidneys. This narrowing, often caused by atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) or fibromuscular dysplasia, restricts blood flow to the kidneys. The reduced blood flow can lead to a decrease in kidney function and can also trigger an increase in blood pressure due to the kidneys' response to perceived low blood volume. This condition is a significant cause of secondary hypertension, meaning high blood pressure that is caused by an underlying medical condition.

Symptoms of veseartériaszűkület can vary and may include sudden onset of severe hypertension, worsening of existing hypertension that becomes difficult to control, or a decline in kidney function, often detected through blood tests showing elevated creatinine levels. Some individuals may experience flank pain, nausea, or vomiting, although many remain asymptomatic until complications arise. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques such as Doppler ultrasound, computed tomography angiography (CTA), or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) to visualize the renal arteries and assess the degree of narrowing.

Treatment aims to restore adequate blood flow to the kidneys and manage blood pressure. This can involve lifestyle modifications, medications to control blood pressure and cholesterol, and in more severe cases, procedures like angioplasty with stenting to open the narrowed artery. The prognosis depends on the severity of the narrowing, the overall health of the patient, and the effectiveness of the treatment in managing blood pressure and preserving kidney function.
