Verðmatið is the process of estimating the monetary value of an asset or liability, used in Icelandic business, finance, and public administration. The term combines verð (price) and mat (assessment or evaluation), and in practice it covers price valuation for transactions, insurance, taxation, corporate reporting, and legal disputes. Valuations aim to produce a substantiated value that can be justified to buyers, sellers, authorities, or courts.

Valuations typically rely on a mix of methods. Market-based approaches compare the asset with recent, similar transactions to infer value. Cost approaches assess the replacement or reproduction cost of an asset minus depreciation. Income approaches estimate value from expected future cash flows, discounted to present value. In practice, valuers select methods appropriate to the asset type, data availability, and purpose, and must document reasoning, data sources, and any uncertainties.

Practically, verðmatið is performed by licensed appraisers, financial professionals, or qualified experts who adhere to national or international valuation standards. The results may affect property taxes, insurance premiums, financial reporting, mergers or acquisitions, and dispute resolutions.

Limitations include data gaps, market volatility, asset-specific factors, and regulatory changes. Ongoing reviews are common as markets and conditions evolve.
