Verzovací, or verzování, is the process of systematically assigning and recording versions of digital artefacts to track changes over time. It enables reconstruction of past states, attribution of edits, and coordinated collaboration across teams.

Core concepts in verzování include repositories, commits or revisions (each with metadata such as author, timestamp and message), and the ability to navigate history. Branching creates parallel lines of development, while merging integrates changes from different branches. Tags mark releases or milestones, and diffs show the exact changes between versions. Version control can operate locally or with remote repositories for collaboration.

There are two broad classes of version control systems. Centralized systems (for example Subversion, CVS) use a single central repository, which simplifies some workflows but can create a single point of failure. Distributed systems (for example Git, Mercurial) store complete histories in each copy of the repository, enabling offline work and more flexible collaboration through pushes and pulls.

Typical workflows involve cloning or checking out a repository, creating a branch, making changes, committing with descriptive messages, pushing to a remote repository, and creating merge or pull requests to integrate changes. Conflicts may arise during merges and must be resolved.
