Vertsystemet is a term used in Norwegian to describe the host system—the organism or set of organisms that harbors a parasite, pathogen, or symbiont and thereby enables its survival and development. The concept is applied across biology, medicine, and ecology to denote the substrate for a life cycle, including the organs and tissues the parasite exploits and the ecological environment that sustains it. Etymologically, vert- derives from the word for host, while -systemet denotes an integrated network or system.

In parasitology, distinctions are made between the definitive (primary) host and intermediate hosts, depending on where the parasite reaches maturity. Examples include Plasmodium species in humans and Anopheles mosquitoes as hosts; Taenia tapeworms using intermediate hosts such as cattle or pigs; and many helminths with complex multi-host life cycles. The concept also encompasses pathogens that require specific host tissues or immune environments to complete their development.

In clinical contexts, identifying the vertsystemet helps explain transmission dynamics and informs control measures, such as targeting vectors or reservoir hosts. In ecology, the host system is central to studies of parasite diversity, host specificity, and coevolution, since parasites adapt to the immune defenses and resource availability of their hosts.

Outside life sciences, the term is less common and may be used metaphorically to describe a computational or organizational "host system" in broader technical writing, though such usage is not standardized in Norwegian.
