Verticaldrain is a term used in civil and geotechnical engineering to describe a drainage element installed vertically into the ground to remove subsurface water and relieve pore-water pressure. It is typically employed to accelerate soil consolidation, improve drainage of saturated soils, and enhance slope or foundation stability. Vertical drains are often referred to simply as vertical drains.

Construction and operation involve inserting slender, perforated pipes or tube assemblies into drilled or driven boreholes that extend from the surface to a specified depth. The drains are usually wrapped with geotextile to prevent fine soils from clogging the perforations and are connected to a collection system, such as a sump or surface drainage, to carry the gathered water away. Drainage materials may include plastic pipes with slots, open-graded aggregates, and filter sleeves, selected to match soil conditions and project requirements.

Common applications include dewatering of excavations and basements, stabilization of slopes and embankments, improvement of bearing capacity in shallow foundations, and drainage of landfills or mine pits. Vertical drains are often used in combination with horizontal drainage networks to create a comprehensive dewatering system.

Design considerations focus on soil type, groundwater conditions, required drawdown, and drainage radius. Clayey soils with low permeability benefit most from vertical drains, while high-permeability soils may reduce their effectiveness. Maintenance concerns include clogging from fines and sediment buildup, which can diminish performance if not managed.
