The city of Vernyj was the historical name for Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan. Founded in 1854 as a Russian military outpost named Zailiysky, it was later renamed Vernyj in 1867. The city grew significantly as a trade and administrative center. In 1921, it was renamed Alma-Ata, and in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it became Almaty. Almaty served as the capital of Kazakhstan until 1997.
