Verkkolasku, the underlying technology, enables companies to send invoices in structured electronic formats such as XML, PDF, or UBL (Universal Business Language), ensuring interoperability between diverse accounting systems.

The primary purpose of verkkolaskureiteet is to automate invoice validation against federal requirements, including mandatory fields such as buyer and seller information, tax identification numbers, and disallowing duplicate submissions. Once an invoice is accepted, it receives an official reference ID from the tax collector, which is then used for subsequent audit and compliance checks. Governments use the data for tax collection, anti‑fraud efforts, and macroeconomic analysis.

Businesses that participate must integrate their invoicing systems with the public API provided by Verohallinto, or alternatively send emails to a designated address with a unique envelope format.
