Verdichten is a German verb meaning to make something denser or more compact, to condense or to thicken. The prefix ver- combined with dicht “dense” conveys intensification or completion and is used in a variety of contexts, from everyday language to technical terms. In physics and civil engineering, verdichten describes a process by which volume is reduced and density increases, for example when soil is compacted to improve its bearing capacity or when powder materials are pressed to form a solid mass.
