Responsibility is often categorized as moral, legal, professional, or collective. Moral responsibility concerns whether an agent’s voluntary actions are right or wrong and whether they deserve praise or blame. Legal responsibility involves duties and liabilities recognized by law, potentially leading to sanctions, damages, or restitution. Professional responsibility refers to obligations defined by a field’s codes of conduct, emphasizing safety, competence, and integrity. Collective responsibility denotes shared accountability within a group, organization, or society.

Key elements include agency (the ability to influence outcomes), intentionality, causation, and foreseeability. Challenges include diffuse responsibility in complex systems, disagreements about causal contribution, and questions of moral luck. In technology and AI, responsibility debates address attribution when autonomous systems act independently.
