Ventriklenes are cavities within the brain that form the brain’s ventricular system and are filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). They are surrounded by brain tissue and help protect and support the brain while participating in CSF production and circulation.

The ventricular system includes two lateral ventricles, one in each cerebral hemisphere, a third ventricle in the midline, and a fourth ventricle near the brainstem and cerebellum. CSF is produced mainly by the choroid plexus in the ventricles, particularly the lateral ventricles, and flows through the foramina of Monro into the third ventricle, then via the cerebral aqueduct into the fourth ventricle. From there, CSF exits into the subarachnoid space through the foramina of Luschka and Magendie and is eventually absorbed into the venous system via arachnoid granulations.

Functions of the ventricles include cushioning the brain, helping to maintain stable intracranial pressure, and removing metabolic waste through CSF circulation. Disruptions in CSF production, flow, or absorption can lead to hydrocephalus, characterized by enlarged ventricles and symptoms such as headaches, gait disturbance, and cognitive changes. Diagnosis often relies on imaging methods like MRI or CT scans, and treatment may involve CSF shunting (such as ventriculoperitoneal shunts) or endoscopic procedures to restore circulation.

In some contexts, ventriklenes can also refer to the heart’s ventricles, namely the right ventricle, which pumps blood to the lungs, and the left ventricle, which pumps blood to the systemic circulation. The heart ventricles have thick muscular walls and work with valves to regulate blood flow.

Etymology stems from Latin ventriculus, meaning a small belly or cavity.
