ventilsstift
Ventilstift refers to the needle-like component found inside the valve of a Schrader valve. This is the type of valve commonly used on bicycle tires, car tires, and many inflatable items. The ventilstift acts as a seal to prevent air from escaping when the valve cap is removed and a pressure source is not attached. When a pump or inflation device is connected, its connector presses against the top of the ventilstift, pushing it inward and opening a path for air to flow into or out of the tire or inflatable. When the pressure source is removed, the spring action of the ventilstift returns it to its seated position, resealing the valve. A small amount of air may escape when the ventilstift is depressed to check tire pressure, which is normal. If a ventilstift is damaged or worn, it can lead to slow leaks or complete deflation. Replacement of a ventilstift is usually a straightforward process for many common valve types.
