Ventillernas is the Swedish term for valves, devices designed to regulate the flow of fluids or gases through a system. They are used across many industries, including automotive, industrial plants, plumbing, and heating. In mechanical engineering, valves are essential for controlling when and how much substance moves between chambers, maintaining pressure, and preventing backflow.

In internal combustion engines, ventillernas control the intake of air and fuel into the cylinders and the exhaust of burnt gases. The most common engine valves are poppet valves, operated by a camshaft-driven valve train that may include lifters, pushrods or rocker arms, and valve springs. As the camshaft rotates, lobes raise the valve stems against spring pressure, opening the valve for a precisely timed portion of the engine cycle. Proper valve timing, seating, and clearance are crucial for performance, efficiency, and emissions.

Valves can be configured with different numbers per cylinder; two, three, or four valves per cylinder are common in modern engines, with multivalve designs facilitating better airflow. Advances in valve technology include variable valve timing and, in some designs, variable valve lift, which adjust valve operation to optimize power and efficiency across engine speeds.

Maintenance involves inspecting valve clearance (lash), valve seats, stems, guides, and springs. Worn, burned, or stuck valves can lead to compression loss, misfires, or rough idling and may require grinding, seating, or replacement.

Beyond engines, ventillernas also appear in plumbing, HVAC, and industrial systems, where they regulate water or gas flow, manage pressure, or prevent backflow. Common valve types include ball, gate, globe, and check valves, each suited to specific applications.
