Veldgrootte, in Dutch, refers to the size or capacity of a field in a data structure, dataset or form. It defines how much information a single field can hold, typically measured in characters, digits or bytes. The concept is central to data modeling, database design and data validation, where appropriate veldgrootte helps ensure data integrity and predictable storage.

In databases, veldgrootte is often specified as a property of a column. It can be fixed, as in CHAR(10), which always reserves a set number of characters, or variable, as in VARCHAR(255), which allows up to a maximum length but uses storage only for the actual data. Numeric fields may also have a size or precision, such as DECIMAL(5,2), indicating total digits and digits after the decimal point. Enforcing a veldgrootte helps prevent overflow, supports consistent indexing, and informs storage requirements.

In GIS and other attribute tables, veldgrootte determines the maximum length of text in an attribute field. In user interfaces, the field length often guides input constraints and form design.
