vekosti

Vekosti is a term used to describe a unit of measurements for time in the Edo period of Japan, spanning from approximately 1603 to 1868. It is an excerpt from a larger calendrical system that incorporates elements from the Chinese calendar, Buddhist, and traditional Japanese measures.

In traditional Japanese timekeeping, Vekosti is often employed to record and calculate periods of time between various events, particularly those tied to celestial events, seasonal periods, and ordinary time intervals. Three main forms make up the Vekosti system: Vekotsi, which is equivalent to 24,000 Chinese zhi, Sen-ryaku, and Narobiaktu. Various other forms of measurement also derived from the Vekosti like Ra Buto also appear in Japan.

The nature of Vekosti is complex and incorporates fractions of periods to demarcate distinct events and temporal divisions. Due to the passage of time and cultural practices, the application and maintenance of this timekeeping system became severely diminished following event of modernization in 19th century.

While it is largely now of historical interest, the Vekosti measurement and the associated culture and traditions associated with this method of timekeeping, are starting to gain increasing attention in contemporary times.
