Vejrmodellering, or weather modeling, is the process of using mathematical models and powerful computers to simulate the Earth's atmosphere and predict future weather conditions. These models are based on fundamental laws of physics, including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and radiation transfer. Data from various sources, such as weather stations, satellites, radar, and weather balloons, are fed into the models as initial conditions.

The atmosphere is divided into a three-dimensional grid, and the models calculate how atmospheric variables like temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind speed change over time within each grid box. These calculations are complex and require significant computational resources. Different models exist, with varying resolutions and complexities, each designed to forecast weather for different time scales and geographical areas.

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) is the core technique employed in vejrmodellering. NWP models produce forecasts that are essential for a wide range of applications, from daily public weather services to long-term climate projections. Meteorologists analyze the output from these models, often comparing several different models to assess the uncertainty in the forecast and provide the most accurate prediction possible. Despite advancements, weather modeling is an ongoing area of research, with continuous efforts to improve accuracy and extend forecast lead times.
