Vedenpehmentämisen, known in English as water softening, is a process designed to reduce the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in water. These minerals, often referred to as "hardness minerals," are naturally present in water and can cause various issues in households and industries. Hard water can lead to scale buildup in pipes, appliances, and fixtures, reducing their efficiency and lifespan. It can also affect the lathering of soaps and detergents, requiring more product for cleaning and potentially leaving residue on skin and fabrics.

The most common method of veddenpehmentämisen involves ion exchange. Water softeners typically use a resin bed containing sodium ions. As hard water flows through the resin, the calcium and magnesium ions adhere to the resin, while the sodium ions are released into the water. This effectively replaces the hardness minerals with sodium, making the water "soft." Over time, the resin becomes saturated with hardness minerals and needs to be regenerated. This is usually done by flushing the resin with a concentrated salt (sodium chloride) solution. The brine solution displaces the calcium and magnesium ions from the resin, which are then flushed away, and the resin is recharged with sodium ions, ready for the next softening cycle.

Other methods for reducing water hardness exist, though ion exchange is the most prevalent for domestic use. These can include reverse osmosis, distillation, or chemical precipitation, but they are often more complex or expensive for typical residential applications. While veddenpehmentämisen is beneficial for reducing scale and improving the performance of soaps, it's important to note that the process adds sodium to the water, which may be a consideration for individuals on strict low-sodium diets.
