A vecindad is a type of housing found in many Latin American countries, particularly Mexico. It is characterized by a shared central courtyard or patio, around which multiple independent housing units are arranged. These units are typically small and basic, often consisting of one or two rooms with a shared bathroom facility.

Historically, vecindades emerged as a response to rapid urbanization and the need for affordable housing in densely populated areas. They provided a communal living environment where families could live close together, fostering a strong sense of community and mutual support. Residents often shared resources and looked out for one another, creating a vibrant social fabric within the complex.

The architecture of vecindades varies, but they generally feature simple, functional designs. Walls are often made of adobe or brick, and roofs can be tin or tile. The central courtyard serves as a common space for social interaction, children's play, and sometimes even small businesses or artisan workshops.
