Vaskuliitti is a general term for a group of diseases characterized by inflammation of the blood vessel walls. This inflammation can weaken, thicken, or scar the vessels, leading to a reduction in blood flow or blockage. In severe cases, blood vessels can rupture. Vaskuliitti can affect any type of blood vessel, including arteries, veins, and capillaries, and can occur in any part of the body.

The causes of vaskuliitti are not fully understood, but it is believed to be an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own blood vessels. Triggers can include infections, certain medications, and other underlying diseases. Symptoms vary widely depending on which blood vessels are affected and the severity of the inflammation, but can include fever, fatigue, weight loss, and specific symptoms related to organ damage, such as skin rashes, joint pain, neurological problems, or kidney issues.

Diagnosis often involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests to detect inflammation markers and antibodies, and imaging techniques like angiography to visualize blood vessels. A biopsy of an affected blood vessel or organ may also be necessary for definitive diagnosis. Treatment aims to reduce inflammation, prevent organ damage, and manage symptoms. This typically involves immunosuppressant medications, such as corticosteroids and other disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial for improving outcomes and preventing long-term complications.
