Heat treatment, or varmebehandling in Danish, is a collective term for controlled heating and cooling of metals to alter their properties without changing composition. The goal is to achieve specific mechanical characteristics such as desired hardness, strength, ductility, toughness, and reduced internal stresses. It is widely applied to steels, aluminum alloys, copper alloys, and other metals, with the exact procedure tailored to the material and component requirements.

Common heat-treatment processes include:

- Annealing: heating to a peak temperature and slow cooling to soften the metal, relieve stresses, and improve ductility and machinability.

- Normalizing: heating above the critical temperature followed by air cooling to refine the grain structure and improve toughness.

- Quenching and tempering: hardening by rapid cooling from a high temperature to form a hard microstructure, followed by reheating to an intermediate temperature to reduce brittleness and increase toughness.

- Surface hardening: carburizing or carbonitriding adds carbon to the surface to create a hard, wear-resistant outer layer while preserving a tougher core.

- Nitriding: introducing nitrogen at relatively low temperatures to produce a hard surface with good wear resistance.

- Austempering and martempering: specialized quenching routes to control microstructure and balance hardness and toughness.

- Age hardening (precipitation hardening): solution heat treatment, quenching, and aging to precipitate strengthening particles, used in certain aluminum alloys and steels.

The choice of process depends on material, geometry, and service conditions, balancing desired properties against cost, distortion risk, and energy use. Quality control typically involves hardness testing, microstructure examination, and sometimes residual-stress measurement, all conducted under controlled furnace or bath conditions to ensure repeatable results.
