Varmafræðilögmálið is the Icelandic term for the laws of thermodynamics. These are fundamental physical laws that describe the properties of energy and its transformations, particularly in relation to heat. There are four main laws of thermodynamics.

The zeroth law of thermodynamics deals with thermal equilibrium. It states that if two systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third system, then they are in thermal equilibrium with each other. This law provides a basis for the concept of temperature.

The first law of thermodynamics is the law of conservation of energy. It states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. In a closed system, the change in internal energy is equal to the heat added to the system minus the work done by the system.

The second law of thermodynamics introduces the concept of entropy. It states that the total entropy of an isolated system can only increase over time, or remain constant in ideal cases where the system is in a steady state or undergoing a reversible process. This means that natural processes tend towards a state of greater disorder. It also implies that heat naturally flows from hotter to colder objects.

The third law of thermodynamics concerns the behavior of systems as they approach absolute zero temperature. It states that as the temperature of a system approaches absolute zero, its entropy approaches a minimum or zero value. This implies that absolute zero is unattainable in a finite number of steps.
