A recognizable feature is the wearing of white student caps (ylioppilaslakki) by graduates and active students, symbolizing academic achievement and student culture. The eve also includes socializing, toasts, and preparations for the day’s activities.

Common traditions on Vappuaatto and Vappupäivä include campus and city festivities, public speeches by student unions and labor groups, and organized picnics in parks and along waterfronts. Traditional foods and beverages are typical during Vappu: sima, a lightly fermented lemonade-like drink often served with lemon slices or raisins; tippaleipä, a funnel-shaped pastry; and munkki, a doughnut. Many people also gather for open-air concerts, markets, and other communal events.

Observances vary by city but are distinctly prominent in Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, and other urban areas, where public celebrations, parades, and large outdoor gatherings are common.
