Vapaakytkin, often translated as freewheel or overrun clutch, is a mechanical device that allows a rotating shaft to turn freely in one direction but locks up and transmits torque in the opposite direction. This unidirectional capability makes it useful in a variety of applications where controlled rotational engagement and disengagement are required. Essentially, it acts like a one-way bearing.

The principle behind a vapaakytkin involves internal components that engage or disengage based on the direction of rotation. Common designs include sprag clutches, roller clutches, and ball clutches. In a sprag clutch, for example, wedge-shaped elements called sprags are held between an inner and outer race. When the outer race rotates in the driving direction, the sprags wedge themselves, locking the races together. If the outer race rotates in the opposite direction, the sprags release, allowing free spinning.

Vapaakytkimet are widely employed in automotive systems, such as in alternators and automatic transmissions, to prevent back-driving or to enable specific operational modes. They are also found in bicycle freewheels, allowing the pedals to remain stationary while the wheel continues to turn when coasting downhill.
