Vapaakirkkoja refers to the group of independent Protestant congregations in Finland that operate outside the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. The term covers several denominations and local churches united by a common emphasis on evangelical faith, the authority of the Bible, and congregational autonomy rather than centralized hierarchy.

The Finnish free church movement grew out of 19th-century revival currents in Finland and broader Europe. Free churches formed as voluntary associations seeking local church governance, open to new members, and distinct from the state church’s structures. Through the 20th century, new congregations were established and regional networks emerged.

Practices and beliefs vary, but common features include an emphasis on preaching, missionary activity, and social involvement, with worship styles ranging from traditional hymnody to contemporary forms. Theologically, they tend to be evangelical and Bible-centered, while doctrine and practice are decided locally by each congregation.

In contemporary Finland, vapaakirkkoja constitute a minority within Christian life but maintain a visible presence through churches, schools, and charitable work. They cooperate through regional associations and ecumenical networks and sustain the right to organize independently from the state church.
