Vannkolonner, sometimes referred to as water spouts, are rotating columns of water that extend from the surface of a body of water to a cloud. They are essentially a type of tornado that forms over water. While visually similar to tornadoes, the exact mechanisms of their formation and intensity can differ.

Vannkolonner typically form in environments with warm, moist air and some form of atmospheric instability. They are often associated with developing cumulonimbus clouds or thunderstorms, though weaker forms can develop under less severe weather conditions. The rotation originates from turbulent air currents near the water surface, which are then drawn upward into the cloud.

There are two main types of vannkolonner recognized by meteorologists. The first is a "fair-weather" vannkolonne, which forms in relatively calm weather conditions and is usually weak and short-lived. These develop from the water surface upward. The second type is a "tornadic" vannkolonne, which is a tornado that forms over land and then moves over water. These are generally much stronger and more dangerous.

Vannkolonner can pose a hazard to boats and other watercraft, as their strong winds and turbulent conditions can capsize vessels. While most are not strong enough to cause significant damage to shorelines, stronger tornadic vannkolonner have been known to move inland and cause destruction. They are a fascinating meteorological phenomenon, showcasing the power of atmospheric dynamics over bodies of water.
