Vanndrevet is a term used to describe systems and devices that are powered by water energy. It can refer to mechanical power produced by water wheels as well as to electricity generated by hydroelectric plants where water flow drives turbines connected to generators. The concept derives from the Norwegian words vann (water) and drevet (driven).

Mechanisms and technology include water wheels, which convert the kinetic or potential energy of moving or falling water into rotational motion. Water wheels come in undershot, breastshot, and overshot configurations. In power generation, water drives turbines such as Pelton, Francis, and Kaplan turbines, which in turn drive generators to produce electricity. Efficiency depends on factors like head and flow, and there are also micro-hydro installations designed for individual homes or small communities.

History and usage encompass a long tradition of harnessing water power. Water-powered mills appeared in ancient times and became widespread in medieval Europe, enabling various industries such as grinding and sawing. The Industrial Revolution accelerated the use of water power in factories. In the 20th century, hydroelectric power became a dominant source of electricity, ranging from large dam projects to run-of-river plants and pumped-storage schemes. Today, vanndrevet also includes small-scale, off-grid installations in rural areas.
