Valtimopuoli, or the arterial side, is a term used in Finnish physiology and medicine to describe the part of the circulatory system that runs through arteries and arterioles from the heart toward the capillary beds. It is typically discussed in contrast to the laskimopuoli, the venous side, which collects blood from capillaries and returns it to the heart.

The valtimopuoli is characterized by higher pressure and lower overall capacitance than the venous side. Arteries and arterioles have thicker, more muscular walls and elastic tissue to withstand and regulate pulsatile blood flow. This portion of the circulation is primarily responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues and for distributing cardiac output through arteriolar resistance, which helps control regional perfusion.

In the microcirculation, the arterial end of a capillary bed features relatively higher hydrostatic pressure, promoting filtration of fluid and solutes out of the capillaries, while the venous end has lower pressure, supporting reabsorption and fluid return. The balance between the arterial and venous sides is essential for tissue perfusion, pressure maintenance, and fluid homeostasis.

Clinical and practical contexts include conditions that alter arterial compliance or pressure, such as arteriosclerosis and hypertension, which affect the valtimopuoli. The term is used in both systemic and pulmonary circulations (for example, the pulmonary arteries constitute the arterial side of the pulmonary circulation). In medical procedures and dialysis, distinctions between arterial and venous sides guide access and flow management.
