Valkrets, also known as the *Valkyrie Circle*, is a term used in Norse mythology to describe a group of female figures who play a crucial role in determining the fates of warriors who die in battle. The Valkyries are often depicted as divine maidens who ride into battle on winged horses, selecting the bravest and most worthy slain warriors to accompany them to Valhalla, the great hall of the god Odin.

The concept of Valkyries originates from the *Poetic Edda*, an Old Norse collection of poems, and the *Prose Edda*, written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century. In these texts, the Valkyries are portrayed as messengers of Odin, tasked with guiding souls to their final resting places. Their name derives from Old Norse, where *valkyrja* means "chooser of the slain." They are sometimes associated with the goddess Freyja, who is also linked to warfare and the afterlife.

In later medieval Scandinavian literature, the Valkyries became more romanticized, appearing in sagas and ballads as ethereal beings who reward heroic deeds.
