Vaalaimetsästys, often translated as whaling, refers to the hunting of whales for their meat, blubber, oil, and other products. Historically, whaling has been a significant human activity, particularly in coastal communities and for large-scale commercial enterprises. Different cultures have engaged in whaling for subsistence, while others developed it into a major industry.

Early whaling methods were often rudimentary, relying on harpoons and small boats to hunt whales close to shore. As technology advanced, larger vessels, more sophisticated harpoons, and steam power enabled whaling fleets to venture into the open ocean and hunt larger whale species. This led to a boom in commercial whaling during the 18th and 19th centuries, with products like whale oil being used for lighting and lubrication, and baleen for corsets and other items.

In the 20th century, the scale of whaling increased dramatically with factory ships that could process whales at sea. However, this intensive hunting led to severe depletion of many whale populations, raising concerns about their extinction. In response, international efforts to conserve whales gained momentum. The International Whaling Commission (IWC), established in 1946, was created to regulate whaling and conserve whale stocks.

In 1986, the IWC adopted a moratorium on commercial whaling, effectively banning most large-scale whaling operations worldwide. While some countries continue to hunt whales for scientific research or under specific objections to the moratorium, international whaling is now a highly controversial and regulated practice. Modern debates surrounding whaling often focus on animal welfare, conservation ethics, and the ecological role of whales in marine ecosystems.
