This practice predates monetary systems and was common in many ancient societies. It involves a mutual agreement between two or more parties to swap items or skills based on their perceived value.

The core principle of vahetöö is reciprocity. Both parties must agree on the fairness of the exchange. The value of the exchanged items or services is often determined by negotiation and the immediate needs of the participants. For example, a farmer might trade surplus vegetables for a blacksmith's services in repairing tools, or a carpenter might exchange their labor for goods from a merchant.

While less common in modern economies with established monetary systems, vahetöö still exists in various forms. It can be observed in informal community exchanges, within families, or in specialized situations where monetary transactions are impractical or undesirable. Online platforms dedicated to bartering have also emerged, facilitating exchanges in the digital age. The benefits of vahetöö include avoiding the use of currency, fostering community relationships, and allowing individuals to acquire goods or services they might not otherwise be able to afford. However, challenges can arise from difficulties in valuing dissimilar items, finding suitable exchange partners, and potential disputes over the quality or quantity of exchanged goods.
