vagir
Vagir is the name used in Indian sources to refer to a submarine in the Indian Navy, most commonly INS Vagir, a diesel-electric submarine of the Kalvari-class (Scorpene-class). The Kalvari-class comprises conventional submarines built to the French Scorpene design for the Indian Navy under Project 75. INS Vagir was constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai and forms part of India’s program to modernize its underwater fleet. In keeping with Indian Navy tradition, the vessel is named after a marine creature, continuing a pattern of naming submarines for sea life.
As designed, Vagir is equipped for stealthy, multi-role operations, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and reconnaissance.
