vadyam

Vadyam is a term used in Indian languages to denote musical instruments and instrumental music. Derived from the Sanskrit vadya-, meaning instrument or something that can be sounded, vadyam can refer to the instruments themselves as well as the practices that rely on them. In everyday usage, vadyam serves as a generic word for any instrumental sound and for performances that feature instruments in addition to or instead of vocal music.

In classical performance, vadyam refers to both melodic and rhythmic instruments and to the repertoire and performances centered on instrumental sound. It encompasses a wide range of instrument families, including strings, winds, and percussion, and is central to ensembles, accompaniment for vocal music, and instrumental solo work.
