vWFantigeenin, also known as von Willebrand factor antigen (vWF:Ag), is a laboratory assay used to measure the concentration of von Willebrand factor (vWF) in blood plasma. Von Willebrand factor is a large multimeric glycoprotein essential for hemostasis, playing a critical role in platelet adhesion and aggregation at sites of vascular injury. It also serves as a carrier protein for coagulation factor VIII, protecting it from degradation and facilitating its release from endothelial cells.

The vWF:Ag assay quantifies the total amount of vWF present in plasma, providing a measure of its synthesis and stability. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing and monitoring von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most common inherited bleeding disorder. Elevated levels of vWF:Ag may indicate conditions such as pregnancy, inflammation, or certain malignancies, while reduced levels can suggest VWD or other coagulation abnormalities.

The assay typically employs an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or an immunoturbidimetric method, where antibodies specific to vWF bind to the antigen in the sample.
