Võimendustoru, also known as a vacuum tube or thermionic valve, is an electronic component that controls electric current flow through a vacuum in a sealed glass or metal envelope. Its primary function is to amplify or switch electronic signals. The operation of a võimendustoru relies on the thermionic emission of electrons from a heated cathode. These electrons are then controlled by one or more grids, which act as gates, modulating the flow of electrons to an anode.

The simplest form is the diode, with a cathode and an anode, used for rectification. More complex tubes like triodes, tetrodes, and pentodes incorporate additional grids to achieve greater control and amplification. Triodes, with a control grid, were revolutionary in early radio and electronics. Tetrodes and pentodes introduced further grids to improve performance by reducing inter-electrode capacitance and increasing amplification factor.

Võimendustorus were the backbone of electronic devices from the early 20th century until the widespread adoption of semiconductor transistors. They were essential in radios, televisions, early computers, and audio amplifiers. Despite their historical significance, their use has largely been superseded by solid-state devices due to their larger size, fragility, power consumption, and heat generation. However, võimendustorus still find niche applications in high-fidelity audio equipment, some guitar amplifiers, and specialized industrial or scientific instruments where their unique sonic characteristics or robustness in certain environments are desired.
