Væskeansamling, also known as edema, refers to the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the interstitial spaces of tissues. This condition can manifest in various parts of the body, leading to swelling. The fluid involved is typically plasma that has leaked out of blood vessels into the surrounding tissues.

Several factors can contribute to the development of væskeansamling. These include increased pressure within blood vessels, which can occur in conditions like heart failure or venous insufficiency. A decrease in plasma proteins, particularly albumin, can also lead to fluid leakage, as these proteins help to maintain osmotic pressure within the blood. Kidney disease or liver disease can impair the body's ability to regulate fluid balance and protein synthesis. Lymphatic system obstruction, caused by surgery, infection, or cancer, can also result in fluid buildup because the lymphatic system is responsible for draining excess interstitial fluid. Allergic reactions can also trigger localized edema due to the release of histamine.

The symptoms of væskeansamling depend on the location and severity. Common signs include visible swelling, a feeling of tightness or heaviness in the affected area, and stretched or shiny skin. In some cases, pressing on the swollen area may leave a temporary indentation, a phenomenon known as pitting edema. The underlying cause of the væskeansamling must be identified and treated to effectively manage the condition. Treatment strategies can include addressing the primary medical condition, adjusting medications, dietary changes like reducing salt intake, and in some instances, using diuretics to help the body eliminate excess fluid.
