Värviedastuskarakteristikut, often abbreviated as CRI, is a quantitative measure of a light source's ability to reveal the colors of various objects faithfully compared to a natural light source. It is a crucial parameter for evaluating the quality of artificial lighting, especially in applications where color accuracy is important. The CRI scale ranges from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the ideal, meaning the light source reproduces colors exactly as they would appear under natural daylight.

A higher CRI value indicates a better color rendering ability. For instance, a light source with a CRI of 90 will generally produce more accurate and vibrant colors than a light source with a CRI of 70. The measurement is based on comparing the appearance of eight standard, specially selected color samples illuminated by the test light source against those same samples illuminated by a reference source. The reference source is typically a theoretical "ideal" incandescent or daylight source matched to the test source's correlated color temperature.

Different applications have varying requirements for CRI. For general lighting in homes and offices, a CRI of 80 or above is often considered good. In more critical environments such as art galleries, museums, retail stores selling colored goods, or medical facilities, a CRI of 90 or higher is frequently preferred to ensure accurate color perception. Conversely, applications where color fidelity is less important, such as street lighting, might utilize sources with lower CRI values. It's important to note that CRI is an average and doesn't guarantee perfect color rendering for all colors.
