Väriämisprosessi is a Finnish term that translates to "dyeing process" in English. It refers to the various methods used to impart color to materials, most commonly textiles, but also paper, leather, and other substances. The fundamental principle involves the application of dyes, which are coloring agents that chemically bond with the material's fibers.

The dyeing process typically involves several stages. First, the material is prepared, which may include cleaning, scouring to remove impurities, or bleaching to create a uniform base color. Then, the dye bath is prepared, where the dye is dissolved in a suitable medium, often water, along with other chemicals like mordants or assistants that help the dye adhere to the material. The material is then immersed in the dye bath for a specific period, under controlled temperature and pH conditions, to allow the dye molecules to penetrate and fixate within the fibers.
