Välimuistivirhe, often translated as cache error or cache miss, refers to a situation in computer science where requested data is not found in the cache memory. Caches are small, fast memory components designed to store frequently accessed data closer to the processor, thereby speeding up operations. When the processor needs a piece of data, it first checks the cache. If the data is present (a cache hit), it can be retrieved very quickly. If the data is not present (a cache miss), the processor must retrieve it from a slower, larger memory, such as main RAM or even disk storage.

A cache miss incurs a performance penalty because the retrieval process takes significantly longer. This delay is known as the cache miss penalty. To mitigate this, when a cache miss occurs, the requested data is fetched from the slower memory and then copied into the cache, in the hope that it will be needed again soon. Various strategies are employed to manage cache content and minimize the frequency of cache misses, such as different replacement policies (like Least Recently Used - LRU) and write policies.

The concept of cache errors is fundamental to understanding computer architecture and performance optimization. Frequent cache misses can severely degrade the overall speed of a system, especially for applications that exhibit poor data locality, meaning their data access patterns are not localized or predictable. Optimizing code and data structures to improve cache utilization is a common practice in software development.
