utóégés, also known as afterburning or reheat, is a combustion process used in some jet engines to increase thrust. This technique involves injecting additional fuel into the exhaust stream of a jet engine and igniting it, producing a significant increase in engine power. The afterburning process occurs after the regular combustion cycle, hence the name utóégés, which translates to "afterburning" in Hungarian.

Afterburning systems are commonly found in military aircraft, particularly in fighter jets and supersonic aircraft where additional thrust is needed for takeoff, combat maneuvers, or supersonic flight. The characteristic visible flame from the engine during afterburning is often referred to as a "reheat glow" or "afterburner flame."

While afterburning can dramatically increase thrust, often by up to 50 percent, it comes at the cost of significantly higher fuel consumption. This makes afterburning suitable only for short-duration use where maximum performance is required. The process also produces higher exhaust temperatures, which can place additional stress on engine components and reduce their lifespan.

Despite these drawbacks, afterburning remains an important feature in military aviation, providing pilots with the ability to achieve superior performance when needed.
