Uszadékgazdálkodásnak, often translated as "sludge management" or "wastewater sludge utilization," refers to the collection, treatment, and disposal or beneficial reuse of the solid residue generated from wastewater treatment processes. This residue, known as sludge, is a byproduct of both domestic and industrial wastewater treatment.

The primary goal of sludge management is to reduce its volume, stabilize its organic content, and remove or inactivate pathogens to prevent environmental pollution and protect public health. Various treatment methods are employed, including thickening, dewatering, anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion, composting, and incineration. Each method aims to achieve different objectives, such as reducing water content, producing biogas, or destroying harmful microorganisms.

Following treatment, sludge can be disposed of in several ways. Historically, landfilling was a common practice, but environmental regulations and the desire for resource recovery have led to alternative approaches. Beneficial reuse is increasingly favored, with treated sludge finding applications in agriculture as fertilizer or soil conditioner, in energy production through biogas generation or incineration for heat recovery, and in construction materials.

The choice of sludge management strategy depends on factors such as the sludge characteristics, available infrastructure, regulatory requirements, and economic considerations. Sustainable sludge management aims to minimize environmental impact while maximizing resource recovery, contributing to a circular economy.
