Uroscopy is the practice of examining urine to diagnose medical conditions, determine health status, or assess the purity of substances. Historically, it was one of the earliest forms of medical diagnosis, dating back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and China. Practitioners would observe the color, clarity, odor, and other physical properties of urine, as well as its sediment, to infer underlying health issues.

In traditional medicine, uroscopy was a key diagnostic tool. For example, in Ayurveda, the color and texture of urine were linked to dosha imbalances, while in ancient Chinese medicine, it was used to assess organ function and vitality. The practice was also employed in European medieval medicine, where physicians relied on urine analysis to detect diseases like diabetes, kidney disorders, and infections.

Modern uroscopy has largely been replaced by laboratory-based urine tests, which provide more precise and objective results. However, some traditional and alternative medicine practitioners still use simplified forms of uroscopy for general health assessment. These methods often involve visual inspection of urine for abnormalities such as cloudiness, unusual colors, or strong odors, which may indicate dehydration, infection, or metabolic disorders.

While uroscopy remains a part of historical medical practice, contemporary diagnostics rely on advanced techniques like dipstick tests, microscopy, and biochemical analysis. These methods allow for the detection of specific compounds, such as glucose, protein, or white blood cells, which are indicative of various conditions.
