Uretaaniyhdisteet are inorganic and organic compounds that contain the urea functional group (O=C(NR_2)_2). The term is used primarily in Finnish chemistry literature to refer to salts or complexes derived from urea, including ammonium carbamate, carbamoyl bromide, and various metal urea complexes such as magnesium hexaurea. Urea itself (NH_2CONH_2) is produced industrially from ammonia and carbon dioxide and is the most common precursor for these substances.

The most significant uretaaniyhdisteet in agriculture are carbamates, which are organophosphate insecticides that release urea upon hydrolysis. Commercial products such as carbaryl and methomyl are widely used for pest control in crops and livestock facilities. In addition, urea-formaldehyde resins, formed by reacting urea with formaldehyde, are major components of adhesives for plywood and particleboard, offering good water resistance and mechanical strength.

Urea complexes with metal ions can act as transporters of nitrogen in plants and are sometimes applied as fertilizers. The complex of ammonium bis(urea) is sometimes used as a buffered nitroprusside source in laboratory chemistry. Thermally, uretaaniyhdisteet decompose via stepwise release of ammonia and carbon dioxide, which makes them useful as controlled-release nitrogen sources.

Handling of uretaaniyhdisteet requires standard chemical safety measures. Many carbamate insecticides are toxic to mammals in acute doses, and some urea-formaldehyde resins release formaldehyde, a known irritant. Environmental impact assessments consider the breakdown products: ammonia, carbon dioxide, and potential phytotoxicity. Regulation in the European Union and other jurisdictions mandates labeling, restricted use, and specific disposal procedures for these substances.
