Ureiaformaldeído, also known as urea-formaldehyde (UF), is a thermosetting plastic resin produced by the reaction of urea and formaldehyde. It is a colorless or light-colored powder that, when mixed with a hardener, cures into a hard, brittle solid. UF resins are valued for their excellent adhesion, hardness, and resistance to heat, water, and scratching.

The production process involves heating urea and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst to form a prepolymer. This prepolymer is then dried and ground into a powder. When ready for use, the powder is mixed with a hardener, typically an acidic substance, which initiates the cross-linking reaction, forming the rigid, three-dimensional network characteristic of thermosetting plastics.

Ureiaformaldeído finds widespread application as an adhesive, particularly in the wood products industry. It is commonly used in the manufacture of particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and plywood, where it binds wood particles or veneers together. Its strong bonding capabilities and relatively low cost make it an economical choice for these applications.

Beyond adhesives, UF resins are also used in the production of decorative laminates, such as those found on countertops and furniture. They can be molded into various shapes for electrical insulation components and appliance housings due to their good dielectric properties. In some instances, UF resins have also been used in textile finishing to impart wrinkle resistance. However, concerns regarding the potential release of formaldehyde from cured UF products have led to its substitution with alternative resins in certain sensitive applications.
