Urbaniseeritus is the process by which populations increasingly live in urban areas, accompanied by the growth of cities and the expansion of built-up areas. In Estonian usage, the term corresponds to the English “urbanization” and denotes both demographic shifts and structural changes in an economy and land use.

Measurement and indicators: the most common indicator is the share of the population living in urban areas (urbanization level). Complementary indicators include the rate of urbanization, the size of urban agglomerations, and the rate of urban land expansion. Definitions vary by country, affecting cross-country comparisons; international bodies often use administrative definitions or population density thresholds.

Drivers and dynamics: urbaniseeritus is driven by economic development and industrialization, which create urban job opportunities. Rural-to-urban migration, natural population growth in cities, and improvements in infrastructure and services all contribute to urban growth. Globalization and technological change also shape city specialization and connectivity.

Consequences and challenges: urbanization can raise productivity and living standards but also increases demand for housing, services, and infrastructure.
