Uppköstum is a Swedish term that translates to "upward vomiting" or "reverse vomiting." It describes the involuntary expulsion of stomach contents from the esophagus back into the mouth. Unlike typical vomiting, which originates from the stomach, uppköstum primarily involves the regurgitation of undigested food or fluid that has already been partially processed in the stomach and potentially moved up the esophagus. This process can occur with or without nausea and retching.

The causes of uppköstum can vary and may include issues with the lower esophageal sphincter, a muscular valve that normally prevents stomach contents from flowing back up. Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can contribute to this, where the sphincter may be weak or relax inappropriately. Other potential factors include certain types of food or drink, eating too quickly, or lying down soon after a meal. In some infants, it can be a normal physiological process known as reflux.

While occasional episodes of uppköstum might not be a cause for concern, persistent or frequent occurrences can indicate an underlying medical condition that requires attention. Medical professionals may investigate the cause through diagnostic tests to determine the appropriate course of treatment, which could involve dietary changes, medication, or addressing any anatomical or functional abnormalities.
