Understepping refers to a gait abnormality where the hind limb does not advance sufficiently forward during locomotion. This results in the hind foot not reaching or passing the track of the forefoot on the same side. It is often observed in horses and can be indicative of various underlying issues.

The causes of understepping are diverse. Pain is a common culprit, stemming from lameness in the affected limb due to conditions such as arthritis, navicular disease, or soft tissue injuries. Neurological deficits can also lead to understepping, as nerve damage can impair muscle function and coordination.
