The underhive refers to the sprawling, often lawless lower levels of hive cities in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. These vast, subterranean warrens are the domain of the underclass, a place of perpetual gloom, pollution, and extreme poverty. Sunlight rarely, if ever, penetrates these depths, and the air is thick with industrial fumes and the stench of decay. Habitation in the underhive is typically in crudely constructed dwellings, often built from scrap and scavenged materials, clinging precariously to the colossal hive structures.

Life in the underhive is harsh and unforgiving. Survival depends on resourcefulness, strength, and often, a willingness to engage in criminal activity. Gangs are a ubiquitous feature, controlling territories, extorting goods and services, and engaging in constant turf wars. The ruling elite of the hive city typically pays little attention to the underhive, viewing its inhabitants as expendable and its problems best left unaddressed. However, the underhive is also a source of cheap labor and, at times, a breeding ground for rebellion or unexpected threats.

Despite the pervasive misery, the underhive is not entirely devoid of life or even community. Settlements and districts can develop their own unique cultures and traditions, and individuals can find ways to carve out a semblance of existence. It is a place of extreme danger, but also a testament to the resilience of humanity in the face of overwhelming adversity.
