Underfångning is a Swedish compound noun formed from under- (beneath, below) and fångning (capture). The term is not widely standardized and its exact meaning depends on the context, making it a relatively uncommon or niche term in standard dictionaries. In practice, it is often encountered in discussions where the notion of capture occurs in an indirect, partial, or subordinate sense.

In maritime and fisheries discourse, underfångning is sometimes used as an informal synonym for bycatch—the incidental capture of non-target species during fishing operations. This usage highlights issues related to gear selectivity, ecosystem impact, and the regulatory measures aimed at reducing unwanted catch, such as bycatch quotas, gear restrictions, and observer programs. The emphasis is on unintended outcomes of fishing activity rather than deliberate harvesting.

In historical or criminological texts, underfångning may appear to describe covert, forced, or secret capture. In modern legal language, however, more precise terms such as kidnapping, unlawful detention, or seizure are typically preferred, and underfångning is rarely used in official statutes or contemporary court discourse.

There is also a limited, specialized usage in discussions of data collection or sampling, where an “under capture” might refer to incomplete or missed data. This sense is highly technical and not widely adopted outside particular academic or professional communities.
